How I workFree initial telephone consultation
I offer a free initial telephone consultation so that we can discuss your concerns and you can decide what the best first steps are. If I am not able to help I may be able to suggest another psychologist that can do so.
How long will an appointment be?
Our first appointment will be between 55-75 minutes and subsequent appointments are 55 minutes (or 75 minutes for couples therapy).
Who attends the appointments?
Depending on the nature of the issues, if the appointment is for your child you may wish to attend without them initially in order to discuss matters as openly as possible. However, this is not always needed or possible and I am happy to fit in with whatever suits you and your family’s needs.
What will the first appointment be like?
I use our first appointment get a thorough understanding of the issues. We will discuss:
- What your concerns are and how long you have had them
- What you have tried so far
- What you would like to be different.
- If we are focusing on your child then I will ask about your child’s physical, social, emotional and cognitive development.
Practical strategies and recommendations
At the end of the first appointment my aim will be to provide you with practical advice in the form of specific strategies and/or direct you to resources which will help with your situation. I can provide a written summary of our discussion and my recommendations for an additional fee.
How many sessions do people need?
It is completely up to you what you feel will work best for you or your family. For some people it is a one-off appointment to develop an understanding of the issues, after which I will provide some strategies and resources. Other people are looking for regular sessions. My practice is very busy so I try and fit in one-off appointments, however the majority of my work is with people looking for a block of appointments or regular therapy.
I use an evidence based approach; using the therapy models with the best evidence for resolving particular issues. The models I use include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Therapy and Systemic/ Narrative Therapy, Multi-Systemic Therapy, Personal Construct Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy and Emotionally Focused Couples' Therapy for relationships. I often use an integrative approach.
